PROJECT:
Internship
BRIEF:
Design a machine to dispense filament from 5 and 20 pound filament spools for desktop 3d printers
TIMEFRAME: 6 weeks
DATE: Summer 2021
This project was done for IC3D and this is only a small part of the project that I was allowed to share with the public
IC3D is a startup 3d printing filament manufacer, offer 3d printing services and soon to be the Virago 700 3D Printer. They pride themselves on being open source and was one of the first companies to make 3d printer filament in the USA. Their mission is
"IC3D is an on-demand manufacturing applications workshop converging traditional manufacturing process with digital 3D printing technologies. From materials creation and custom-built 3D printing equipment to large object 3D printing and low volume production, IC3D’s open and collaborative culture is crafting next generation solutions"
While at my internship I was tasked with coming up with a way to help assist desktop 3d printers when using the 5 and 20 pound spools that IC3D sells since they are to heavy for the machines to pull from
When I arrived at IC3D much of the engineering work was already done on the product. My role was to redesign the machine to make it function and be easier to work with as well as manufacture. In order to prototype 3d printing was employed to make rapid changes
The final product was designed to be an add-on for the Virago 700 3D Printer that the company was working on as well as an accessory for desktop 3d printers. It would also come in IC3D signature colors. The product is currently in the testing phase and I am unable to show any photos of the product.
