PROJECT:
Product Design
BRIEF:
Design a new bag for the brand Peak Design
TIMEFRAME: 4 weeks
DATE: Fall 2021
Peak Design is a startup company based out of Califonia, that designs and manufactures high-quality photography equipment. They focus heavily on the consumer rather than growth and want to create a great atmosphere for all of their workers. Their mission can be summed up in 6 phrases.
01 Make the best things
02 Succeed at the expense of nobody
03 Treat our customers as peers
04 Offset our environmental impact
05 Use our voice to inspire positive change
06 Prioritize happiness overgrowth
In order to better understand the Peak Design brand language, as well as the vision for the new bag, I created a Brand Mood Board, a CMF (Color, Material, Finish) Mood Board, and a Vision Mood Board.
From this, I found that Peak Design Focuses heavily on the customer, uses innovative materials, and wants to provide a unparalleled experience while using their products.
In order to help my ideation I looked at the current bags from Peak Design as well as bags from other competitors
Peak Design Everyday Bag V2
Great Bag, but made for photography
Lowepro Freeline 350 Backpack
Again made specially for photography and not much else
Brevite Jumper Backpack
Not made for photography only, but cannot be adapted to different uses
User Interviews
In order to find current problems with Photography bags, I sent out a survey to users of Peak Design Bags as well as other bags. I also joined a Peak Design user group where they informed me of ways to improve the current bags
From this, I found that adaptivity and improving the straps on their products were two features that we missing
Ideation
Based on the brand research and user interviews I conducted I was ready to begin sketching out some of my early ideas. I focused on creating 3 different concepts. My main desire and goal throughout this was to focus on the straps and adaptivity
Given the feedback and insight, my research and user interviews gave me I decided to pursue idea 1. This bag improves upon the current strap and allows multiple uses and integration with other Peak Design products. It also maintains the brand language by having a similar shape and elements such as the buckle and the Peak Design tag
The bag would come in the standard Peak Designs colors, as well as a new Mint color
The bag features many modularity elements such as using other Peak Design travel pouches
